Yaleosaurus
Name means: “Yale lizard”
Pronounced: YAYLE-oh-SAWR-us
This is considered to be ANCHISAURUS.
Yandusaurus
Taxon: Ornithopoda Hypsilophodontidae
Name means: “Salt Capital lizard”
Pronounced: YEN-DOO-SAWR-us
Length: 5 ft (1.5 m)
Time: Middle Jurassic, 175 – 163 mya
Place: China
Named in 1979, Yandusaurus was a lightweight, primitive member of the
two-legged, plant-eating hypsilophodontids. Its large eyes and nimble
hands probably aided this small dinosaur in gathering a leafy meal.
Yangchuanosaurus
Taxon: Theropoda, probably Allosauridae
Name means: “Yongchuan lizard”
Pronounced: YAHNG-CHWAHN-o-SAWR-us
Length: 33 – 36 ft (10 – 11 m)
Time: Late Jurassic, 163 – 145 mya
Place: China
A large, allosaur-like predator, Yangchuanosaurus may have had delicate
bone crests on its skull. It walked on two legs, and its hands carried
three sharp talons. Like other This dinosaur was named in 1978 for Yongchuan
County in China
Yaverlandia
Taxon: Pachycephalosauria Pachycephalosauridae
Name means: “Yaverland one”
Pronounced: ya-vuhr-LAN-dee-a
Length: about 3 ft (1 m)
Time: Early to Middle Cretaceous, 125 – 119 mya
Place: England
Yaverlandia was a very early, very tiny plant-eating pachycephalosaur,
named in 1971 for Yaverland Point on the Isle of Wight in England. Although
it is generally considered to have been a primitive member of the thick-skulled,
two-legged pachycephalosaurs, some scientists believe that Yaverlandia
was more advanced than previously thought, despite its early appearance
in the fossil record.
Yimenosaurus
Taxon: Prosauropoda
Name means: “Yimen lizard”
Pronounced: yee-MUHN-o-SAWR-us
Length: about 30 ft (9 m)
Time: Early Jurassic, c. 206 – 180 mya
Yimenosaurus appears to have been a primitive, short-skulled prosauropod,
related to the larger and more specialized sauropod titans. This long-necked,
small-headed dinosaur, named in 1990, is thought by some researchers
to have been a plateosaurid.
Yunnanosaurus
Taxon: Prosauropoda Yunannosauridae
Name means: “Yunnan lizard”
Pronounced: YOON-NAHN-o-SAWR-us
Length: 23 ft (7 m)
Time: Early Jurassic, 208 – 194 mya
Place: China
Yunnanosaurus, although a large member of the long-necked, small-headed
prosauropods, may have actually been a juvenile. The genus was named
in 1942 for Yunnan Province in China.
